Find True Identity Discipleship and...
Sexual brokenness. What is it? Eugene Peterson describes it best in his translation of Roman 1:24-32 in the Message Bible. Which reads:
So God said, in effect, “If that’s what you want, that’s what you get.” It wasn’t long before they were living in a pigpen, smeared with filth, filthy inside and out. And all this because they traded the true God for a fake god, and worshiped the god they made instead of the God who made them…
We get our English word pornography from the Greek word porneia. The Message translates this word as filth, filthy inside and out. Indicating, not only our behavior, but also our urges and passions (i.e., our sexual appetites and orientations, etc.) are filth / filthy inside and out. Romans 1 shows the plethora of porneia in our lives as sinful. That all sexual activity outside the boundaries of a one man / one woman covenant marriage is porneia—filth / filthy inside and out. But Pastor Paul doesn’t stop there. He compares porneia to worship. Noting that porneia is the worship of creation instead of Creator God. By noting the intimacies of porneia (sex sins), Paul illustrates the narcissistic worship of self as god.
Then the Pastor begins to describe where porneia eventually leads. The sin, the porneia of humanity begins with and leads to deliberately smothering the truth, i.e., to deceiving and being deceived. Leading to the false worship of human sexuality. It’s confusion, abuse, and defilement. Consider:
Worse followed. Refusing to know God, they soon didn’t know how to be human either… Sexually confused, they abused and defiled one another… all lust, no love. And then they paid for it, oh, how they paid for it—emptied of God and love, godless and loveless wretches.
Yes, I intentionally removed the Pastor’s focus on homosexuality here (the dot… dot… dots…). So that we might consider that all types of sexual sinning is a downward slope. Starting with the filth of porneia (v26), devolving into specific appetites and activities of akatharsis—all kinds of impurities (v27)—and graduating into a plethora of gross sexual crimes against God and humanity (v28). Including homosexuality (both its urges and its passions—i.e., its behavior and orientation); child sex fitting into this category of gross sins too. Really, any sin, even more so, any habitual sin is gross sin. So, the Pastor uses both natural and unnatural sins to stress the downward spiral of sinning—i.e., to stress the point.
Pastor Paul finalizes sin's spiral with:
Once they didn’t bother to acknowledge God, God quit bothering them and let them run loose. And then all hell broke loose: rampant evil, grabbing and grasping, vicious backstabbing...
These terms within the Bible language: let them run loose, rampant evil, grabbing and grasping, vicious backstabbing have a sexual context to them. Demonstrating a downward spiral into sexual confusion, abuse, and defilement.
They made life hell on earth with their envy, wanton killing, bickering, and cheating. Look at them: mean-spirited, venomous, fork-tongued God-bashers. Bullies, swaggerers, insufferable windbags! They keep inventing new ways of wrecking lives. They ditch their parents when they get in the way. Stupid, slimy, cruel, cold-blooded. And it’s not as if they don’t know better. They know perfectly well they’re spitting in God’s face. And they don’t care—worse, they hand out prizes to those who do the worst things best!
Sexual brokenness is trading the truth about God and sex for the lies of porneia and akatharsis. Refusing God and His ways for the smothering confusion, abuse, and defiling acts of lust. The worship of creation instead of Holy God.
